Playing With Your Food

Next time you’re at the sushi bar hint to the chef that you’re a Star Wars fan. Or if you happen to be in Japan go find Okitsugu Kado. He is the creator of these fine recreations of Star Wars characters. After of hours of carving various vegetables he usually will display them instead having his customers eat them. Besides, could one put a price on such items and who would eat them? Not I. Clearly this sushi chef is a hardcore fan of Star Wars.

The Doritos Taco

20120308-192904.jpg

Enter the Doritos taco. It’s new to us today. Get it while you can, Taco Bell will only have it for a limited time. Basically it’s the regular hard shell taco but instead of the corn shell it’s a nacho cheese Dorito shell.

It’s no blackjack taco but it’s pretty good. Best part is that it comes in a fancy sleeve. Makes driving while eating much neater. It will set you back about $1.29 plus the aftermath.

Steamed Stuff Artichokes

I do enjoy cooking. I mean I got to eat right? So why not eat something fresh and home cooked. Here’s an old family recipe for making stuffed steamed artichokes.  Prep time is about 30 minutes and cook time ranges from 40 minutes to a hour.

Prep

Ingredients

  • Four artichokes
  • 1 cup of grated parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup of italian bread crumbs
  • 1/2 of greek olive pitted (optional)
  • olive oil

You will need a large pot with a cover and a streamer to place at the bottom.

First you will need to cut off the stem of the artichoke so they sit level. Then take a little off the top (about 2 inches) just enough to remove the sharp tips. Once they are all cut place them in a water. This will help the artichokes open up.

While they are soaking you can combine 1 cup of parmesan cheese and the 1 cup of  bread crumbs. I use a cookie sheet. Then slice the olives.

Next we get to get the artichokes ready to stuff. To do this you’ll need some force.

First shake the artichoke to get any water out thats in it. Then grab it by the bottom and slam it into a clean flat surface.

This is an important step in order to filled the artichokes up with the stuffing. You may want to use your figures after to open each one up a little more.

Now we stuff them! I like to pour the stuffing over them first. Then I go in and work the stuffing into each leaf. Simply take your time checking each leaf and add the stuff when needed. When you’re done stuffing pick up the artichoke and give it a little tap on the counter to lightly pack the stuffing in.

Stuff it

The olives are optional. You don’t have to go crazy with them, just a few here and there. Once you are happy with the amount of olives grab the olive oil and drizzle over in a spiral motion.

Finally place the artichokes in pot with a steamer. Not a lot of water is needed just enough to almost come though the steamer is ok.

Cook on medium heat for 40 minutes.

Cook them!

I’ve cooked artichoke for 40 minutes, I’ve also cooked them for a hour and a half. You really can’t over cook them. The worst that could happen is that you’ll run out of water. So keep an eye on them. 40 minutes is a good time, if they seem tough you could try cooking them longer but most of the time it’s the artichoke. There’s some tough ones out there.

I hope you try it.
